Halloween in my suburban California neighborhood in the late '60s and early '70s was a lot like what you experienced. The parents were barely involved, beyond answering the door and handing out candy. We kids were off trying to gather as much as possible. But it was more about the sport than the candy. I suppose we ended up eating most of the crap, but what really fired us up was finishing off another block and feeling the bag get heavier. We'd run for a few hours and by the end of the evening have a pillow case half or two-thirds full. It was crazy. Parents never came along. Well, when I was six, say, I had an older brother who was eight and another who was 10 or 11, so I guess that counted as proper supervision.

This year, for Niko, we went over to a friend's house and were joined by another couple with a little guy. So we had five parents accompanying four kids. The most striking thing was how few houses were playing along. Maybe 1 in 4? Apparently there's a rule here that if the porch light isn't on, you don't approach the house. That was new to me. When I was a kid, you visited all but the most forlorn, run-down, scary houses. And you knocked or rang until the goods were delivered. There was no opt-out!

Oh, yeah -- the pillowcases were indispensable. I'm surprised that so few households up there participate. Seems anti-social to me, really. Down here, I'm wondering if the parents screen out houses or whole blocks that don't look sufficiently receptive or cheery -- for instance, houses that don't have lots of plastic schlock festooned all over everything.
