Hey Dan, its the "official" city bird of Berkeley. Apparently they nest in palm trees here. There is a group whose name I forget working to encourage them in town. They have set up about 6 nest boxes set up in Cesar Chavez Park, and a month ago there was at least one nest box being used, just west of the NE corner of the park.

I love owls. It seems we have a couple that come through here in the summer, and a different one in the winter. One day I came home at lunch, and there were four of them, wings spread wide, sunning themselves on the white rock driveway. It was one of the most bizarre scenes I've ever seen.
